Rule of Law?

Simon Jenkins skriver om tortyr på Guantanamo i The Guardian idag. Jag är emot tortyr och jag vet att det sker i Sverige vilket gör frågan aktuell även här. På knuff.se finner man en hel del blogginlägg. Själv har jag aldrig torterat eller trakasserat någon eller gett order om dylik behandling.

Frågan är hur många liv USA förlorar i AfPak och Irak för att de blivit kända för att tortera i Guantanamo Bay? Det måste gå att arbeta med säkerhet utan att tillgripa tortyr. Vår civilisation måste bli bättre än den var.

I sin bok från 1974 Obedience to Authority: An Experimental View beskriver Stanley Milgram, en psykolog från Yale University, ett experiment som gäller tortyr från icke professionella torterare. En summering följer:

"The legal and philosophic aspects of obedience are of enormous importance, but they say very little about how most people behave in concrete situations. I set up a simple experiment at Yale University to test how much pain an ordinary citizen would inflict on another person simply because he was ordered to by an experimental scientist. Stark authority was pitted against the subjects' strongest moral imperatives against hurting others, and, with the subjects' ears ringing with the screams of the victims, authority won more often than not. The extreme willingness of adults to go to almost any lengths on the command of an authority constitutes the chief finding of the study and the fact most urgently demanding explanation.
Ordinary people, simply doing their jobs, and without any particular hostility on their part, can become agents in a terrible destructive process. Moreover, even when the destructive effects of their work become patently clear, and they are asked to carry out actions incompatible with fundamental standards of morality, relatively few people have the resources needed to resist authority."

Varför är den här upptäkten så viktig?

Det första är att den påvisar orsaken till att förintelsen kunde ske. Som Adolf Eichmann, följde de bara order.

De andra är att man måste verka för att det i samhället inte uppstår lokaler och situationer där Milgrams uppställning tillåts verka fritt för då sker tortyr.

Det tredje är att om man misslyckas med 2. så uppstår potentiellt en ny typ av koncentrationsläger där mentalt förkrympta individer vegeterar, likt dem i Ursulas vård i Disneys The Little Mermaid.

Min fråga är vad som händer om samhället beslutar sig för att driva politik med tortyr, mental som fysisk, ... på lång sikt. Om man med andra ord beslutar sig för att skrämma sig fram och ge folk "stryk".

Vill vi ha en ledare som President Obama som säger att "America doesn't do torture" eller en som den förre Vicepresidenten Dick Cheney som säger att de gör vi, i vissa fall när vi vill förhindra ett nytt 9/11?
